Peak Waste? The Other Side of the Industrial Cycle
نویسندگان
چکیده
The modern industrial cycle is mainly based on non-renewable mineral resources extracted from the Earth’s crust. After being processed and transformed into commodities, the products of mining become manufactured products which go through the economic system and are then discarded in the form of gaseous, liquid or solid waste. Eventually, the mass of the output in the form of waste must balance the input in the form of minerals. A large number of model studies have been performed on the first phase of the cycle—the production of mineral commodities—often with a specific interest in fossil fuels, with the objective of determining the future prospects of production. However, very few model studies of this kind have been performed about the future trends of waste generation. In this paper, we examine models of the industrial cycle compared to historical trends in municipal solid waste generation for different regions of the world. We show that waste generation in developed countries goes in parallel with the trends of industrial production and that several regions are showing a declining trend which may be interpreted in terms of “peaking” just as it is often done for the production of fossil fuels. Therefore, the “waste problem” in terms of increasing amounts of waste to be processed and disposed may not be so urgent as it is commonly perceived. OPEN ACCESS Sustainability 2014, 6 4120

Comparing supply side and demand side options for electrifying a local area using life cycle analysis of energy technologies and demand side programs
The main aim of this paper is to select the best portfolio of renewable energy technologies (RETs) for electrifying an elected area which is not connected to any other grids. Minimizing total costs of the system is considered as the main factor in finding the best decision. In order to make the optimum plan more applicable, the technique of life cycle analysis is applied. This technique takes i...
متن کاملOptimization of thermal curing cycle for a large epoxy model
Heat generation in an exothermic reaction during the curing process and low thermal conductivity of the epoxy resin produces high peak temperature and temperature gradients which result in internal and residual stresses, especially in large epoxy samples. In this paper, an optimization algorithm was developed and applied to predict the thermal cure cycle to minimize the temperature peak and the...
متن کاملSustainability Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Of Household Food Waste Management in Urban Areas
Background: Food waste is a very serious problem, it is proven that Indonesia is the second largest producer of food waste in the world. A limited waste management system will result in a decrease in environmental quality such as air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. So far, the waste management system is only limited to reducing waste generation. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a ...

Background and Objective: one of the major challenges in urban management in human societies is related to the collection, recycling and disposal of solid waste and sewage. Poor waste management causes pollution of water, soil and air. It will have a major impact on public health. The aim of present study was to investigate the current status and select the best options of management of munici...
